Linseed oil was often used as a final varnish on paintings from the early to mid 1900's. Over time it can darken and hide the rich and vivid colors that the painting originally had.
This portrait was given a thorough cleaning and the linseed oil was removed and replaced with a clear varnish to bring out its rich colors.
